The colourbond art studio was too hot to teach in on even relatively mild days until the COOLMAX CM50 was installed. The new cooler replaced another brand. The older cooler was too noisy on anything but low speed, but at low speed it didn't have enough capacity. Another advantage of the COOLMAX CM50 is that the studio only had a single 16 AMP electricity supply. Because the cooler only draws 1 AMP, it could be plugged into an existing power point. A reverse cycle air conditioner would have required an extra circuit from the main distribution board which would have cost around $300.
The low power consumption of the cooler also makes it ideal for other schools as well as conventional homes, as it can save hundreds of dollars per year in electricity costs. With increasing electricity costs, and further increases forecast, this is particularly important for people on restricted incomes. The cooler is effective in most situations, including open plan living areas, rumpus rooms, garden workshops and holiday homes.
